Can Hoya grow from a single leaf?

Hoyas can be propagated from leaf cuttings, but not all hoya species can do this. Some hoya species can grow roots from a single leaf cutting, but they may not produce a new stem or plant. Other hoya species may not grow roots at all from a leaf cutting.

Here are some examples of hoya species that can and cannot propagate from leaf cuttings:
  • Hoya carnosa: This is a common hoya that can propagate from leaf cuttings. It has thick and waxy leaves that can root well in soil or water. However, it may also take a long time for a new stem or plant to develop from a leaf cutting. A stem cutting with at least two nodes is preferred for quicker propagation.
  • Hoya kerrii: This is a hoya that cannot propagate from leaf cuttings. It has heart-shaped leaves that can grow roots easily. However, it doesn't develop into a plant. A stem cutting with at least one node is needed for effective propagation of this hoya.
  • Hoya linearis: This is a hoya that cannot propagate from leaf cuttings. It has thin and narrow leaves that do not have enough energy to produce roots or new growth. A stem cutting with at least three nodes is required for successful propagation of this hoya.
  • Hoya pubicalyx: This is another hoya that cannot propagate from leaf cuttings. It has dark green leaves with silver flecks that are attractive but not suitable for rooting. A stem cutting with at least two nodes is needed for effective propagation of this hoya.

If you want to keep a heart-shaped leaf for a long time, it can be challenging when your plant becomes overgrown. You'll need to prune it, fertilise it, and manage any pests. Some species of Hoya, like Hoya kerrii, can remain in leaf form for a long time without developing into a full plant. You can keep it on your desk or in a small space, watering it occasionally to maintain its health.
